When my friends at SMITH MAGAZINE were rounding up stories about moments that changed peoples’ lives, I contributed an essay about my first kiss. They included it in a book used to raise funds so they could keep empowering writers to get their stuff out there. Some of my heroes, including Dave Eggers and Jennifer Egan, were featured in the same collection. Sometimes working for free is more than worth it.
